Find the Size of a Letter

© 2011, Martin Rinehart

I use my initials in my favicon. I'm trying to do a large version (that shows big, when you go to my website and shrinks down to favicon size). So how big is a letter?

Well, I don't know. I'm looking at letters that are heroic in Chrome, really big in Firefox and comparitively modest in MSIE and Opera. All sized in pixels and none seeming to agree on the relationship of the bounding box to a single-letter span. Ugh.

I'm not going to even think about designs that depend on cross-browser letter sizing. (Oh, yeah. The family specified is "sans-serif" which, I assume, defaults to Arial in Windows. That may be true.)
